Update after update seems to focus on this, the Black Rock Art Foundation-funded raypunk showcase on San Francisco’s waterfront, but it does currently stand as a beacon for ‘the future that never was’ . This week it was acknowledged at its opening ceremony by San Francisco’s mayor, Gavin Newsom.

The Rocket Ship was declared open on Friday, with a launch party attracting media and sci-fi fans alike. The rocket builders themselves have been linking to a few fun Flickr galleries, and their blog has links to some very decent launch day video.

Attendees included Elvis, goggle-wearing space rock band Phenomenauts, pulp fiction literature buffs and a curious orange pachyderm.

Raygun Gothic Rocket Ship in San Francisco

News came to me via Twitter user Doug DeLong of a raygun gothic art installation, residing in San Francisco after stints at Burning Man and NASA Ames for Yuri’s Night. The ship will replace a 10-foot arachnid sculpture on the Embarcadero waterfront, in residence until September 2011.

Though its creation seems innocent, the artists’ comments about a time when people looked forward to space exploration ring a positive but political bell in times when NASA funding is called into doubt.

The Raygun Gothic Rocket is a project founded by Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, David Shulman and John Manyjohns. It features a stepladder entrance to its charming interior, complete with alien scanning devices and 360-degree swivelling pilot’s seat. There is a video tour from the maker’s Faire to demonstrate this, embedded below, courtesy of Wired.
